SWLS Frequently Asked Questions

  1. What do I do if a person does not answer all five questions?
  2. At what point in an interview or paper and pencil measure should the SWLS be given?
  3. What are possible mediating variables that I should take into account?

1. What do I do if a person does not answer all five questions?
We would suggest imputing a score by taking the modal response from the other four items.

2. At what point in an interview or paper and pencil measure should the SWLS be given?
There is some suggestion from research on other life satisfaction instruments that the recent emotional context may have an influence on ratings. Thus, earlier in an interview before potentially troubling issues are raised may be better. However, it should be reiterated that research on the SWLS suggests that such contextual biases have a minimal effect, if any.

3. What are possible mediating variables that I should take into account?
See the section on normative data for clues as to possible mediating variables; however, research with persons with TBI is too preliminary to make firm assertions.
